Three of the guides who lead our Manaslu Circuit trips grew up within a day's walk of Tsum Valley, and they end up narrating half the trip from memory rather than a guidebook. We sat down with them on a rest day in Chhekampar to ask what most visitors walk straight past.
The gompas nobody itineraries for
The answer, more than once, was the small gompas below the main monasteries that rarely make it into anyone's itinerary. They're a ten-minute detour, not a half-day add-on, and the caretakers there have time to talk in a way the bigger sites don't allow for.
You can walk Tsum in a guidebook's footsteps, or you can walk it in ours. The second way stops more often and finishes with better stories.

That's the difference between a valley you tick off and one you actually remember three years later — and it costs nothing extra to ask for it.
