Travel insurance is mandatory for every trek we run — not a suggestion. Here’s specifically what to check for before you buy a policy.
What your policy needs to cover
- Emergency evacuation, including helicopter rescue — this is the clause most general travel policies quietly exclude or cap too low for Himalayan altitudes.
- Trekking at your trip’s maximum altitude — check the policy names the actual altitude (many standard policies cap cover at 3,000-4,000m, well below Everest Base Camp’s 5,364m or Kala Patthar’s 5,545m).
- Trip cancellation and curtailment, in case illness or a family emergency cuts your trip short.
We don’t sell insurance or recommend a specific provider — Himalayan rescue-specialist insurers exist precisely because general travel policies get this wrong, so it’s worth searching for one rather than assuming your usual provider has you covered. Send us your policy’s altitude and evacuation clauses before departure if you’re unsure; we’ll tell you honestly if it looks thin for the route you’ve booked.
